From Iowa to the Courtroom
Melissa’s journey began when her family immigrated from Jamaica to the US when she was 11. Settling in a small farming town in Iowa as the only black family, they faced challenges but found far more kindness. Melissa’s experiences there fostered her commitment to diversity, justice, and standing up against unfairness.
A Voice for the Voiceless
Graduating as class president and delivering a compelling speech on the separation of church and state earned Melissa a scholarship from the American Legion. These formative experiences reinforced the importance of speaking out against injustice and standing in solidarity with those who need a voice.
A Legal Journey for Justice
Melissa pursued her passion for justice at Northwestern University and later at Loyola University for law school. There, she engaged in legal clinics, advocating for justice in Hispanic, African American, and Korean communities. Her dedication extended to participation in trial advocacy teams, reflecting her commitment to being a voice for others.
Deputy District Attorney Extraordinaire
Since 2006, Melissa has served as a Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles County, completing over 85 trials. Her work in the Sex Crimes Division, including a two-year tenure at Stuart House, demonstrates her commitment to prosecuting crimes against children. Recognizing her exceptional dedication, the District Attorney’s office honored her with the Michael P. Noyes Humanitarian Award in 2021.
Championing Diversity and Education
Melissa’s commitment to justice extends beyond the courtroom. She coaches the Loyola Law School Byrne Trial Advocacy Team, empowering the next generation of legal professionals. As a passionate member of the capoeira community, she teaches free classes in gang-affected neighborhoods, showcasing her dedication to community engagement.
From Global Girl Project to the Bench
